Pedestrian Monitor Program Information
- The Pedestrian Monitor Program is designed
to assist walking students to and from school safely. The Parent Permission &
Instruction Form for the Pedestrian Monitor Program is required for
Kindergarteners only. AM Kindergartners can use the program to walk to school,
and will be bused home after school. PM Kindergartners are bused to school,
but can use the program to walk home from school.
- A parent must be there to meet your child at
a monitor meeting location, otherwise your child will walk with the monitor
back to school, and you can meet your child there to be picked up.
- There are six crossing guards to assist
children across NW 20th Avenue.
- Pedestrian monitors were selected through a
series of panel reviews and both background and reference checks.
- There will be additional personnel and
monitoring during the first 2-3 weeks of the school year to help make
adjustments if and where necessary.
- Because Daybreak Middle School students
start class at 8:40, those primary school students who walk to school with
their older friends and siblings have the option of having breakfast in the
cafeteria or playing on the playground until school starts at 9. The
playground is monitored from 8:30-9 AM each day.
- For those middle school students waiting to
walk home with their primary school friends and siblings, there is an option
to volunteer to help primary school teachers with their routines at the end of
the school day.
- Skateboards are NOT allowed to be ridden on
school property. We are checking into whether or not scooters are allowed, and
will post the information here as soon we know.
- You must list all of the names of those
people allowed to pick up your children from school or a walking monitor. If a
change is necessary, please submit it in writing to your child's teacher or
the school office. Emails work well too!
- The Daybreak Schools and the BG School
District are not responsible for carpools and other methods of traveling to
and from the school campus.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How many schools in the district use a
Pedestrian Monitor Program?
Two--Daybreak and Maple Grove.
- Why are the primary and middle school
start times different?
It was decided that in order to accommodate the traffic caused by having such
a high percentage of students that will not be riding a bus to and from
school, middle school would begin 20 minutes earlier than the primary school.
- Why are multiple buses necessary if the
number of students needing a bus is so low?
We pay money by the mile, not by the number of buses running. The Daybreak
Schools boundary is so large that it makes more sense financially to have
several buses running a shorter distance than to pay for one bus to travel all
over the area.
- How was the walking area around the
school and its associated risks determined?
The walking radius of the Daybreak schools was assessed by the BG School
District, the City of Battle Ground, and a local risk management firm. Speed
signs, flashing lights, crosswalks, and traffic patterns were all designed
around the findings defined by those participating parties.
- Why can't students walk through the empty
field behind the school?
Walking students should always use the sidewalks and walking paths where
provided. Construction is to set to start next spring in the empty field, and
we want students to get used to having to walk around that area.
- What is the earliest I can drop my child
off at school?
Middle school students can be dropped off as early as 8:15. Primary students
can have breakfast in the cafeteria or play on the supervised playground as
early as 8:30, or can be dropped off in the classroom at 8:50.
- When and where is my child supposed to
meet with the Pedestrian Monitor?
Times and locations depend on where you live and what is easiest for you. The
following is a list of times and meeting locations along the walking route.
Please be at your selected meeting location 5 minutes prior to the scheduled
time. Click here for maps of the

- Why can't the school do more to
coordinate other ways of getting to and from school?
Due to liability issues, the Daybreak Schools
and the BG School District are not responsible for carpools and other methods
of traveling to and from the school campus.
